Depression is one of the leading causes of disability and suicide, particularly in the 15\u201329 age group.<\/p>\n<h2>Bipolar Disorder \u2014 Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Bipolar disorder is characterised by alternating episodes of depression and mania or hypomania.<\/p>\n<h3>Depressive episodes<\/h3>\n<p>Symptoms are similar to depression \u2014 low mood, loss of interest, sleep disturbances, thoughts of death (lasting at least two weeks).<\/p>\n<h3>Manic and hypomanic episodes<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>excessively elevated mood or euphoria<\/li>\n<li>unusual surge of energy and increased activity<\/li>\n<li>elevated self-esteem or grandiosity<\/li>\n<li>rapid speech, distractibility, jumping between topics<\/li>\n<li>reduced need for sleep \u2014 feeling refreshed after 3\u20134 hours<\/li>\n<li>impulsive behaviour \u2014 risky business decisions, gambling, reckless sexual behaviour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The difference between mania and hypomania: mania lasts at least one week, is more severe, often requires hospitalisation and may be accompanied by psychosis. Hypomania lasts at least 4 days and is less pronounced.
